Vision Statement
At the heart of the VCE Vocational Major is a commitment to empowering every student to thrive through hands on learning, real world skills, and meaningful pathways. We envision a future where all learners are respected for their individuality, encouraged to express their creativity, supported in building resilience, and inspired to grow into capable, confident contributors to their communities and industries.
Over the two years, students complete between 16 and 20 units, across 4 school-based subjects and one external VET subject. Assessment is based on coursework completed at school—there are no external exams, study scores, or ATAR awarded through the VCE VM.
Over the two years, students complete between 16 and 20 units, across 4 school-based subjects and one external VET subject. Assessment is based on coursework completed at school—there are no external exams, study scores, or ATAR awarded through the VCE VM.
A key component of the program is the inclusion of Vocational Education and Training (VET), allowing students to gain industry-specific skills and qualifications. Additionally, students participate in Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) in an industry area that aligns with their VET studies, providing valuable hands-on experience.
Four core study areas
-
VCE VM Literacy
-
In this subject, students will strengthen their reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills across a wide range of real-world contexts. The focus is on developing the ability to gather, interpret, and communicate information clearly and effectively.
Students will engage with print, visual, spoken, digital, and multimedia texts, building their capacity to understand and create purposeful, audience-appropriate communication.
This subject aims to build students’ confidence in both written and verbal expression, equipping them with essential communication skills for success in further education, the workplace, and everyday life.
-
VCE VM Numeracy
-
In this subject, students will develop logical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and practical mathematical skills for everyday life. The course covers key mathematical concepts, including number, measurement, shape, and data.
Students will strengthen their numeracy skills by applying them to real-world situations—at home, in the workplace, and within the community. Through hands-on and relevant learning, they will gain confidence in using mathematics to make informed decisions. Numeracy equips students with essential life skills such as personal budgeting, comparing prices, understanding taxes, and effective
-
VCE VM Personal Development Skills
-
In this subject, students learn how to become active and engaged members of their community. They explore their personal identity and develop a deeper understanding of their place in the world. The course examines how communities function and collaborate on local, national, and global levels. Students apply their learning by working in groups to plan and deliver a project that supports their local community. The subject also focuses on building key life skills, including emotional intelligence, social awareness, and leadership—essential for success in future education, the workplace, and everyday life.
-
VCE VM Work Related Skills
-
This subject is designed to prepare students for success in the ever-evolving world of work and further study. Students will explore a range of career pathways, develop a personalised career action plan, and build essential job-seeking skills. The course covers important topics such as workplace health and safety, employee rights, and how to support and collaborate effectively with colleagues. Students will strengthen their communication and teamwork abilities and learn how to manage and navigate workplace relationships. Throughout the subject, students will also identify their individual strengths and learn how to present them confidently in job applications and interviews. As part of the course, each student will develop a professional portfolio to support future study or employment opportunities.
Vocational Education and Training (VET)
VET can be included as part of the VCE and provides students with the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications while still at school. These programs offer industry-specific knowledge, practical skills, and hands-on experience that prepare students for employment and further training.
VET courses are delivered by TAFEs or other Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), and cover a wide range of fields such as health, engineering, digital media, building and construction, early childhood education, and many more.
Completing a VET course gives students a valuable head start in their chosen industry and supports a successful transition from school to work or further study.
Structured Workplace Learning (SWL)
Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) gives students the opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge in real-world settings. Through placements with industry professionals, students gain valuable insight into the workplace and can explore whether a particular career path is right for them.
SWL helps students develop essential employability skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. It also enhances future job prospects by providing hands-on experience and building meaningful industry connections.
This program supports students in making informed career choices and increases their readiness for the world of work.
