Proactive Parents

Box Hill High School actively encourages parents to be involved in the school. Not only do parents participate in the usual activities such as working bees, canteen duty and School Council, they also share their professional expertise directly with students.

Parents with skills in science, mathematics, mechanics and electronics have helped to expand technology opportunities. Since 2001, through the model solar car program, up to 40 students each year have worked after school and on weekends designing and building vehicles to compete in the Monash University's annual 'Model Solar Vehicle Challenge.' The program relies heavily on parents, who work with a small group of teachers to mentor teams of keen and committed students, achieving excellent results. Electives in technology such as electronics, are also offered to interested students by qualified professional engineers.

Our students gain from the additional expert skills parents can offer the the school. At the same time, the parents involved in the various programs are enthusiastic about the personal benefits. These include sharing enjoyable hours working together with their son or daughter and classmates in an area of interest, feeling the satisfaction of passing on practical knowledge to young people who are eager to learn, and becoming more closely involved in the school community. New volunteers to existing programs are welcomed, as are new ideas about other ways parents could join in school life. A dynamic Parents' Association welcomes all interested parents and meets monthly to arrange fundraising activities and support school initiatives. The weekly newsletter updates the school community on current projects. > Inquiries
