New - Syllabus for Technology Studies
Automation and Robotics/Mechatronics
This course has been designed to explore the areas of Electrotechnology and Mechanical Technology. It will cover both theory and practice associated with the Design/Production/fabrication and assembly of components to make working models to meet specific design criteria.
Year 8 will focus on skill acquisition in both theory and practice of both electrical and mechanical areas.
Electrotechnology will cover:
- Basic electrical theory
- Components operation and identification
- Circuit reading using standard symbols
- Testing equipment
- Electric motors including stepping motors
- Circuit assembly and soldering
Mechanical Technology will cover
- Basic drafting skills
- Materials, typs, availability, characteristics
- Fixing methods, brazing, slver soldering, welding, glueing, screwing, riveting
- Drive systems, belts, gears, Hydraulics
- Cutting tools, saws, drills, milling, highspeed and carbide lathe tools, grinding
- Manual machine operation including lathe and mill
Year 9 will introduce computer control and bring together technologies studied in Year 8 to design and produce a major project utilizing additional computer based material along with the manual based equipment.
New areas to be included are:
- Design using CAD
- Manufacture using CAM using CNC mill.
- Microprocessors
- Programming and logic sequences
