Individual Care
The school is committed to fostering the talents of all students so that individual potential is maximised.
We therefore have a wide range of support services and programs designed to ensure that our reputation for providing a high quality of individual care is maintained.
These include:
A structured Peer Support Program in which older students are trained as leaders to foster the social development and adjustment of new Year 7 students during the transition period from primary school.
An experienced teacher who, as Year 7 Transition Co-ordinator, organises the movement of students from primary to secondary school ensuring supportive and individual attention.
A Term 1 camp for all Year 7 students which develops cohesion within the group as well as establishing a strong sense of belonging.
The professional services of an experienced educational psychologist, provided by DEECD who has regular weekly sessions at the school.
A Student Welfare Co-ordinator with over twenty years experience as a teacher.
School Prefects who act as role models and are points of contact for students at all levels in the school and in particular for new students.
Challenge activity seminars designed to equip middle school students for career and study success.
Year level and subject based camps such as the SOSE Year 9 Canberra Trip.
A well-developed careers program run by the careers co-ordinator who has over twenty-five years teaching experience. Ms Evans-Hayes gives detailed advice and analysis to all students on career choices and course selection throughout the school year.
Two multi-cultural education aides who speak several languages and an English as a Second Language Program in which the English staff are sensitive to individual student's needs.
Instruction in study methods and weekly supervised after-school study sessions.
Information for parents through semester reports, parent teacher interviews and contact with year level co-ordinators as the need arises.
Accelerated Parents Support Group which aims to support the gifted and talented student.
The care for individuals is enhanced by the relatively small size of the school, which has a building capacity of about 800 students. A strongly enforced code of conduct ensures that the school program is not disrupted and that the learning environment is harmonious.
In all, there is a long tradition of individual care which is well supported by our committed staff.
