Award Winning School
2008 results obtained in the Australian Schools' English Competition, the Australian Schools' Science Competition and the Australian Schools' Computer Skills Competition run by the University of NSW as well as the Westpac Mathematics Competition again showed our students to be amongst the best performers in the state. These competitions attract thousands of entries from the best students across the nation and it is pleasing to see so many of our students excel. Of 224 BHHS students sitting the UNSW Science Competition, 29 gained High Distinctions, 88 Distinctions and 76 Credits. This puts 11% of our students in the top 1% of the State. For the English Examination, BHHS students at year 7 and year 9 were awarded medals for scoring the highest marks in the State.
Other student accomplishments incude a Year 7 student who was selected to represent Australia at an International Information Technology Conference in Kuala Lumpur in May 2008. One of our Year 11 students worked in the CSIRO's Student Research Science Scheme in July 2008 at La Trobe University's Dept of Botany researching the genetic modification of crops.Yet another of our Year 11 students won a place at the prestigious National Youth Science Forum held in Canberra in January 2009. This profound experience included offerings from most of the ANU's Research Schools and at least five of CSIRO's Divisions. We are proud to announce that a Year 10 student has been awarded the Kwong Lee Dow scholarship to Melbourne University. This year's student musical achievements include:
- A Year 11 student placed 1st in the Under 14 vocal solo at the Dandenong Festival and awarded a special scholarship from the Berwick Amateur Theatre Society. She was placed 3rd in the Under 16 Vocal Solo and was awarded an Honourable Mention in the 15 – 18 years Vocal Section at Boroondara.

Project SATERN
Science and Technology Education Resource Network
Box Hill High School is proud to announce the success of a submission for Federal Government funding for the regional science and technology education Project SATERN. The project is under the "Local Communities Working Together" initiative and has as its cornerstone the partnership of all levels of educational institutions in our region, including primary schools such as St Francis Xavier and Laburnum PS, secondary schools such as Blackburn English Language School and Forest Hill Secondary College as well as tertiary institutions such as Monash University, Deakin University and Box Hill TAFE. Charter workgroups considering Curriculum, Resources, Governance and Professional Development are now being formed. The recommendations of these groups will inform the architectural design of the building and how it will be operated. It is planned that SATERN will be a working resource for our entire regional education community.
We invite representatives from all educational institutions in our region to be a part of this exciting venture.

Eastern Zone Athletics
The 2009 Eastern Zone Championships were held at Knox Athletic Track. Box Hill High School sent its largest team ever after having unprecedented success at District level. Students competed on the day and the school and I would like to congratulate all of them on their efforts. It is a fantastic effort to make it to Eastern Zone being the winners of both the school and district events. The teams efforts resulted in Box Hill High coming 10th overall out of more than 50 schools, behind schools with over 2000 students.
Two of our students were also Zone champions, making them the Best Overall Athletes in their age group. One of our students broke his own Zone record by over a metre.
Australian Science Olympiads
The 2008 National Qualifying Examinations were held in September to identify and select students to represent Australia in the International Science Olympiads competitions in 2008 in the fields of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Amongst over 3,000 other candidates, our Box Hill High School VCE students stood out in Biology with 5 High Distinctions, 1 Distinction & 2 Credits ; in Physics - 1 High Distinction, 2 Distinctions & 1 Credit and 1 Credit in Physics. This puts these students in the top 10% nationally.
The top 20 students in each study are then invited to a summer school in Canberra as Australian Science Olympiad Scholars . We are pleased that two of our students have been invited to attend this unique experience in Jan 2009, one in Biology & one in Physics. Special congratulations to these students on their selection in this prestigious program.
Solar Car
The Model Solar Car program has been a wonderful addition to the school's program. The mentors have insisted at all times that the students in the program prepare their own cars, and that they understand the scientific and engineering principles which go into the design of the cars. Students have learnt about solar power, electronic systems, use of the lathe and other construction techniques, use of computer programs to aid design, aerodynamic testing, vacuum forming and suspension systems. More importantly, they have learnt much about problem solving and teamwork.
In 2001 Box Hill High School entered the Solar Car Competition for the first time and won awards for Best Engineered Car, Best New School and a wild card entry to compete at the International Symposium on Solar Energy. Whilst in South Australia they won awards for Best Presentation by a team at this prestigious conference. In 2002 four students were invited to give a presentation to educators at the 8th International Symposium on Renewable Energy in Florida, USA. This was certainly an experience of a lifetime for all students, parents and teachers involved. At the 2002 Solar Car National Event in Sydney, once again Box Hill High School students starred.
At the 2003 Australian International Model Solar Car Challenge, we had a fantastic result in Adelaide. Helios placed 9th. Conquest was given an on the spot wild card entry and ended up placing second.
For 2004, the Telstra Foundation approved a grant of $1,200 from its Telstra Kids Fund towards the school's model solar car project.
In 2005, three cars from Box Hill High school competed in the national model Solar Car Challenge, which was held at ScienceWorks, including the car prepared by our exchange student, Luiz Nauiack, representing Brazil. All three cars won their first round races and proceeded to the last 16. Two of the cars made it to the last eight and were beaten narrowly in their quarter finals. These were Leela, the car which won the Victorian Challenge and Scarlet Revolver, which won the award for best engineered car at the state level. Scarlet Revolver was awarded best engineered car at the national level. Congratulations to Luiz, to the all girl team which built and raced Leela, to Martin Pizzey who built and raced Scarlet Revolver single handed as part of his VCE studies, and to all the other teams which entered cars in the Victorian Challenge. Our thanks to Mr. Smidt, who has shown so much dedication to the project over a number of years, and to our wonderful parent mentors, especially Steve Perry and Ian Gardner.
In the 2007 competition, the sun level during the finals dropped to 8%, our girls' team won the finals “by a nose” to become the Victorian Model Solar Car Champions for 2007. Our Year 8 boys’ team was placed 3rd and our Year 9 boys’ team won “Best Engineered Car”.
2008: BHHS Students Australian International Solar Car Champions!
Our Solar Car Team has had its most successful year to date. Competing amongst 32 other cars from Australia and other countries, this is the first time in 20 years that a team from Victoria has won this international event. This success came after 'My Little Pony' won the State Finals & 'NOBN' (made by two year 7 students) came 4th. 'NFG', the International Champion Car, was knocked out of the State finals by a faulty switch but fortunately drew the wildcard to compete in the international arena and win the day!
'Solar car is an outstanding example of an extra curricular activity that excites the passions of our students. This program challenges our students to discover creative and innovative solutions to engineering problems. It stretches students, teaches them about commitment, team work, persistence and the heartbreak of racing. I would like to applaud all the students who took part in the competition, and the teachers and mentors who led them.'
Kate Mitchell, Principal.
2009: State Championships
Congratulations to the Box Hill High School Model Solar Car teams. In the State Championships on October 17th and 18th, one of our cars came 2nd in the racing competition and another car won Best Engineered Car. These teams are off to compete in the National Finals to be held in Melbourne at the end of October.
